Dog owners - message from UCSW

Postby admin » Fri Dec 19, 2008 7:03 am

Dear UCSW Member

Do you own a dog and if so are you aware of the new Defra 'Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs' which is currently in its consultation stage? You have until 31st December, 2008 to make your views known....

Points taken from the new code include:

* Your dog must wear a collar and identity tag when in a public place and should also be permanently identified.
* Dogs should not be left unattended in a vehicle.
* If you have more than one dog it is important to give each animal the opportunity to eat in privacy.
* Dogs should not be routinely left on their own for more than a few hours during the day.

"Breach of a provision of the code is not an offence in itself, but if proceedings are brought against you for a welfare offence under the Act, the court may take into account the extent to which you have complied with the code."

The complete document may be found by visiting: ... /index.htm It makes very interesting reading!

The purpose of this consultation is to agree the content of the code which would provide practical guidance to owners and keepers of dogs on how to meet their statutory responsibilities under section 9 of the 2006 Act (the duty on owners/keepers to provide a duty of care for their animals). The Code is likely to be issued in 2009 under the terms of section 14 of the 2006 Animal Welfare Act.
If you have any comments you wish to make regarding this Code, please send responses to either: Elaine Cannon, Area 8B, No 9 Millbank, 17 Smith Square, London, SW1P 3JR Telephone: 020 7238 5332

Or email: clearly stating the name of the consultation in the subject header. Eg: Code of Practice - Dogs.

Responses should be received by 31st December 2008.

The Union of Country Sports Workers will be submitting a response on behalf of its members. Should you also wish to respond, we would urge you to do so as soon as possible.
